CHURCH TRUTHS QUESTION 16

QUESTION 18   Is it necessary for women to cover hair when praying.?

ANSWER: The Bible says nothing about a woman covering her hair when she prays. The questioner may have 1 Cor. 11:4 in mind,  For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. This is a vail or hat that covers the head. There is another covering in this chapter. The hair of the woman V.15,  But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

The womanís hair is her natural covering that display her femininity and also that she is subject to the man.  In contrast to the V.14, it say it is a shame for a man to have long hair.  The shame is that he is wearing  the sign of the woman with his long hair. In both these verses nature is in view and not the church.

The problem at Corinth was that there were Jews (Acts 18:8) there and the men wore  head coverings. V. 4. He writes that they should not. There were also  prostitutes there that had been saved and the came uncovered. (See Ch. 6:9-11)

This chapter is the assembly (church) at Corinth and Paulís instructions to them of showing the three fold headship in V.3. The man, the head of the woman and Christ the head of man and God the head of Christ. (Who is the last Adam) This is the order that was lost in creation. Eve got out of place and Adam followed and God drove them out of the garden.  If you read on in this chapter you will see it goes back to the order lost in creation.

The lost order in the Fall is only restored in the Church. Angels are looking on and a sister is said to be subject to the man by wearing an artificial head covering. V.10: For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. The hair could not be the covering her as she does not put that on and off.

So, it is clear that a scriptural gathering of the Lordís people the sisters should be covered as a sign to the angelic world that God order is being displayed.

Since the head covering is a sign of her giving place to the man Paul later adds in Ch 14:34, Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; For the sister to be speaking or praying it would mean she was in the place of authority and her covered head sign would be meaningless.

Now this is church truths and not gospel. A woman or man is not saved by church practices, but by the gospel our the Lord Jesus Christ. He took our sins upon HImself and died a terrible death to save us.. You either come to Christ as a lost guilty sinner and accept His offer of salvation or you live and die in your sins and go to hell.  The choice is yours. What will you do with Christ, trust him today as Saviour or meet Him later as Judge?
