Hi Harold, how do the scribes translate this passage as God hating
The Lord said, “I hate divorce” (Mal. 2:16
If you take your Bible and open it to Mal 2: maybe I can help you
It is most important to find the context in history where some of
these issue were.
The Books of Malachi, Ezra and Nehemiah were all part of the same
time of the history of Israel. These event were all after the 70
year captivity in Babylon.
In Neh. 13:23, we read, 23 In those days also saw I Jews that had
married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:
Ezra 10:2,3 We have trespassed against our God, and have taken
strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in
Israel concerning this thing. Now therefore let us make a covenant
with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of
them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble
at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the
God's people were marrying strange wives which was contrary to His
purposes to bring the SEED of the woman (Christ) into the world by a
Jewish married virgin.
So God is saying that they were to put away (divorce) those wife
above, and be faithful; the wife of the covenant. (Jewish virgin)
This is what is in view in Mal. 2: Verse 15 is the key verse. They
were to keep their covenant of marriage within the nation because
God was seek a godly seed--Christ to be born V.15 They should not
break their covenant by marrying any other than Jewish virgins. V
Now the line of the tribe that this godly seed was to come through
was that of Juda. He is mentioned V 11 He married a Canaanish
woman.. This would destroy the royal line of Christ. Juda must have
sons that would prolong the tribe. They could not be born of a
heathen mother. This presented a difficult situation. His two sons
refused to have children and God destroyed them. (read Gen,
38:2..... along with V.11 above. Juda's wife died. He became a whore
master and his daughter Tamar played the harlot and became pregnant
by her father and law. One of the twins she had continued to the
genealogy of Christ Matt 1:2,3 God used this wickedness to recovered
the nearly lost lineage of Christ. Read all of Gen 38:
So what God is saying in V. 16, For the LORD, the God of Israel,
saith that he hateth putting away: (that is the Jewish wife) for one
covereth violence with his garment, (they did and hid it like
covering it up) saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your
spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. (deceitful of unfaithfully)
No woman ever begat a child. The child is always said to be begotten
of the father. This is why sin entered the world by Adam, and not
Eve. Rom 5:12 This is why Jesus could partake of the flesh and blood
of Mary and be sinless. If you read the genealogies it is also
Abraham begat Isaac, Isaac begat Jacob and etc. The only woman that
ever begat a child was Mary begetting Jesus. Jer 31:22 How long wilt
thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath
created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man. It
most certainly was a new thing a woman becoming pregnant apart from
a man. Little wonder Mary said "how can these things be seeing I
know not a man." She compassed the man.
If this is not clear to you then write back.
Under Moses there was a putting away for another reason Deut 24:1. .
In creation, God never intended divorce at all.
I hope you can see this better now.
Love in Christ
