SALVATION QUESTION 220
QUESTION: 220 Do you know anywhere in the Bible where it says we choose to be saved or are we chosen to salvation?
ANSWER: This is a very controversial question that has been debated over many years. The Bible teaches much more than it really says. I cannot say that it definitely says that we choose or that we are chosen to salvation. Further the word salvation had three stages in it. We are saved, we are being saved and we are going to be saved.
When God created Adam He gave him a free will set before him options of using it. He told him the consequences of making the wrong choice. We know the story well, he made the wrong choice and sinned.
The first two boys in Genesis 4: seemed to have that same freedom of choice. Abel made the right one and Cain made the wrong choice. I gather Cain’s freedom of choice from V.7, If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. “If thou doest well” strongly implies that he could. If he had no power to make the right choice then he could not be accountable for not doing do. This would infringe on the justice of God. The two boys set the stage for humanity, being the first two that were born sinners and needed salvation.
Salvation is provided for sinners (1 Tim 1:15) It is proffered to all. “ And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Rev 22:17c) However, since man is in spiritual darkness he needs help to find this provision and offer. The plan of God for this is the preaching of the gospel. Though it the Spirit of God opens the mind and heart so man can hear the call to repent and trust Christ to be saved. He is commanded to repent so must have the ability to do it, or the command would be void. This is why He sent the early disciples out to preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15.) It is His will that all be saved (1 Tim 2:4) He is not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9) His will will never be done, because of the darkness in man’s heart and his lack of seeking God. So God seeks people through the gospel. Once people trusts Christ as Saviour they are saved and are then predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son (Rom. 8:29)
To all unsaved. Reader, if you are still unsaved my prayer is that this will open your eyes and hearts to turn to Him for salvation. John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
